Abi Titmuss posing in Black

Abi Titmuss is supporting a new campaign to teach women how to check for early signs of breast cancer.

An instructional DVD, accompanied by a special glove, will be available to help women carry out self-examinations.

According to breast cancer charity the Genesis Appeal, a number of women had no idea how to detect breast cancer. Over a third (35 per cent) surveyed said they did not check for lumps regularly while 33 per cent said they were unsure how to do it.

Only a third of women who did check their breasts regularly said that they included important areas such as under the armpit when checking for lumps.

However, only 20 per cent of women who carried out self-examinations did so at the same time every month.

Abi Titmuss said: "I was stunned when I realised how many women didn't know what to do. Everyone knows that you should check for lumps but most women I know haven't the faintest idea how."

She continued: "Usually it is only when a friend or relative is diagnosed with breast cancer or finds a lump that needs some investigation that women find out what they should be looking for."

Surgeon Lester Barr, chairman of the Genesis Appeal, said he hoped the DVD would provide women with more ammunition in the fight against breast cancer.

"The campaign is just another vital step in helping to create a future without breast cancer," he said.
